Notes From The Process

MaryAnn Koslowski

Let me tell you something that will save your life as a filmmaker: pre-

production is not optional.

I know TikTok makes it seem like you can just show up with a camera, yell

“action” and boom — a masterpiece. And for certain projects, sure, you can just

run-and-gun it. But even then, you need to plan where you’re going, what camera

you’re using, if you’re alone or with someone, all of that is pre-production.

When you’re building something intentional, something with a story visuals or meaning… yeah, you’re gonna need a plan.

Everyone has a vision in their head of what they want something to look like, but

if you don’t do the work beforehand — shot lists, mood boards, location notes,

wardrobe, logistics — then everyone is imagining a different version. That’s how

chaos happens.

Every camera placement, every movement, every piece of blocking is chosen for

a reason. When you skip pre-production those choices become random instead

of meaningful.

Good production means:

  • few surprises on set

  • fewer problems that blow up your schedule

  • fewer “wait…what are we shooting?” Moments

  • a smoother edit because everything matches the plan.

And most importantly, makes the final piece stronger. Pre-production isn’t busy

work, it’s the blueprint that lets the whole team build the same house instead of

accidentally constructing five different sheds.
